Project Suraksha

In the relentless hustle and bustle of India's transportation industry, truck drivers remain the backbone. The long hours on the road, exposure to dust, pollution, and inconsistent lighting put them at a high risk of eye strain and vision impairments.

Recognizing the critical need to address these issues, Project Suraksha was launched, a collaborative initiative with Tata Motors Finance and Samhita-CGF.

The Vision Behind Project Suraksha

The name "Suraksha," meaning 'protection' or 'security' in Hindi, embodies the core mission of the project: safeguarding the health and well-being of truck drivers. This initiative specifically focuses on eye health, a crucial aspect often overlooked yet essential for the drivers' safety and efficiency on the road. Truck drivers are particularly susceptible to vision-related issues due to prolonged hours of driving, exposure to varying light conditions, and the physical strain of their work environment. By addressing these issues, the project aimed to enhance the quality of life for these drivers and ensure their journeys are safer and more comfortable.

A Holistic Approach to Eye Health

In collaboration with the Netrum Eye Foundation, Givfunds organized a series of eye health check-up camps across various regions in India. These camps were meticulously planned to ensure maximum outreach and effectiveness. The screenings were not just about diagnosing vision impairments but also providing immediate relief through prescriptions and referrals.

During these camps, a comprehensive eye examination was conducted for each driver. The screenings identified conditions ranging from mild eye strain to more severe vision impairments. For those diagnosed with vision issues, the project provided essential corrective eyewear, ensuring that no driver left the camp without the necessary aid to improve their sight.

Impact

A total of 2,000 truck drivers benefited from the preventive eye screenings. Out of these, many were found to need corrective eyewear, and they received spectacles tailored to their specific needs.

Looking Ahead

As Project Suraksha moves forward, the goal is to reach even more drivers, expanding the scope of the screenings and the range of services offered. The initiative aims to create a sustainable model of health intervention that can be replicated in other sectors, ensuring that no individual is left behind when it comes to essential health services.
